Bosch WAN24100GB review

 Review: May 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Bosch WAN24100GB is a compact, entry-level washing machine that's highly energy-efficient and quiet. Bosch's EcoSilence drive is guaranteed for 10 years, making this a recommended machine in the highly competitive 300 - 400 range. We just wish it had a faster spin speed!

The Bosch WAN24100GB is a Series 4 model from Bosch and is new for 2016. This new range ramps up the capabilities of Bosch's entry-level models quite considerably.

The design is much more modern-looking than the previous generation, with an easy-to-use rotary dial to select a programme, and a clear LED display with touch controls for additional information and settings.

The control panel display shows programme progress indication, temperature, spin speed, remaining time, time delay and load recommendation. Touch control buttons are used to choose a start delay, temperature, spin speed, SpeedPerfect vs EcoPerfect, Aqua Plus option (for extra rinse), and to select Start or Reload.

The drum size of this machine is 55 litres, making it quite a compact machine, so it's ideal for a tight spot.

Washing and performance

The WAN 24100GB is a relatively compact machine, with a 7kg load capacity, which is towards the lower end of what's available. It's still big enough for all but the largest families, however.

It's an extremely economic machine to use, especially for an entry-level model, with an energy rating that's 10% better than A+++. The EcoPerfect option uses less water and electricity, making the machine very frugal to run, whereas the SpeedPerfect uses more, but speeds up the wash. The total time required for a standard 60° cotton wash at full load is 3 hours and 20 minutes, but SpeedPerfect will reduce this, and there are faster options available. The Super Quick 15/30 minute programmes are ideal for lightly-soiled loads and quick freshen-ups.

For Bosch machines, we always recommend the Aqua Plus option, which uses more water, but produces better rinse results.

One of the best features about this machine is that it uses Bosch's EcoSilence Drive, which uses magnets instead of brushes, making the machine extremely quiet during both washing and spinning. You'll be hard pressed to find a quieter machine for the price.

We just want to point out that the maximum spin speed of this particular model is just 1200rpm, giving it a spin class of "B". That's low for our liking, but it depends on whether you hang your washing out to dry on a clothes line, or use a tumble dryer.

The EcoSilence drive comes with a 10-year guarantee, and that places this low-cost washer ahead of most others when it comes to piece of mind. Bosch washing machines generally have an excellent reputation for reliability, and we'd say that this is a key selling point of this machine.

Conclusion - a recommended entry-level washing machine

If you have a limited budget, Bosch is one of the best brands you can look for, and this new Series 4 range for 2016 looks like a particularly strong option. Not only is it easy to use, energy efficient and quiet, but the 10-year warranty on the motor is a key asset. The one thing we're less happy about is the low spin speed. But as we commented, whether this will be an issue or not depends entirely on your washing habits. The step-up Bosch WAN 28100GB has a maximum spin speed of 1400rpm and costs a little extra.

What this machine demonstrates admirably is that there's no need to spend a lot of money to get a good washing machine.

Does this vibrate on wooden floors?

Asked by Elizabeth from UK on 28th Oct 2017
I have been told even with Silent machines they vibrate and make a noise on wooden floors.

Hi there. When we got this machine only last week, as we live on a 2nd floor and machine sits on a wooden floor, we found out thru looking at a video online that if you've got room to pack a small piece of foam (from a swimming noodle preferably), to the top right and top left hand side of washing machine so it's ultra stable, the vibration virtually disappears! It really works! :-)

Does this do spin only (without a rinse)?
