Hotpoint FFU4DX review

 Review: October 2015

Rating: 3 stars

In a nutshell: The Hotpoint FFU4DX is an American-style fridge-freezer with a very generous fridge capacity and decent freezing space too. The stainless steel finish gives it a contemporary look, and its build quality seems very solid. With a good internal layout and fully frost-free running, it's a very practical solution for a busy modern family.

Design & features

The Hotpoint FFU4DX American-style fridge-freezer has a gloss stainless steel finish and chunky metal handles, giving it something of an industrial look. Inside, it's really solidly built - much better than most Hotpoints. At 70cm wide and 78cm deep, this won't fit into the standard space for a fridge, so it will probably need to stand alone.

The upper fridge doors are very easy to open, once you get used to the fact that you need to open the right hand door before you can open the one on the left. The lower drawers are really easy to slide in and out too.

Fridge space is very generous, and the freezing capacity in the lower drawers isn't bad either. The main fridge section has a sliding drawer at the bottom, that can be used to store meat and fish. Above that are two half-size drawers, intended for salad and veg. Above the drawers are three adjustable glass shelves. The door storage is excellent, with plenty of room for bottles, cartons and so on.

Both the fridge and freezer compartments are frost-free.

Efficiency, noise & reliability

Fridge-freezers with larger storage capacity inevitably use more energy than smaller models, and so, although the FFU4DX has the same A+ efficiency rating as Hotpoint's smaller models, it uses about 50% more electricity. In terms of noise levels, it's about average.

The average lifespan of a fridge-freezer is around 4 years, and we'd expect this model to give average performance. If the compressor fails, the cost of replacing it is likely to be several hundred pounds, making it uneconomical in most cases.

Conclusion - a good option for a family

Most families will benefit from the extra space that the Hotpoint FFU4DX fridge-freezer has to offer. It's priced very affordably for what you get, and the design and build quality are definitely a cut above typical Hotpoint standards. The layout is very practical, and there's plenty of useful storage space here. There's a lot to like about this appliance, and it offers good value for money.
