Hotpoint RPD9467J review

 Review: April 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Hotpoint RPD 9467 J UK washing machine is a very versatile choice for a modern family. With a large 9kg capacity, a sleek control panel, steam wash and low temperature programmes, it's built to cope with the demands placed on it. We also like its Super Silent technology and ten-year parts warranty, and we think it offers very good value for money.

The Hotpoint RPD9467J Ultima S-Line washing machine feels solidly-built and has a smart, modern look, thanks to its neat control panel and LCD display.

The controls are quite minimalist in design, and you might need to refer to the user guide until you get used to it. The rotary dial sets the programme (the programmes are listed on the inside of the detergent drawer) and the details of the setting are displayed on the LCD panel. Push buttons integrated into the display panel are used to set other options. The power button is tiny, and is hidden away by the rotary dial.

It's quite a high-tech look for a mid-range washing machine, and it adds a premium feel to what would otherwise be a rather bland design.

Washing and performance

The RPD9467J has a 9kg washing capacity, and is able to handle large loads, including duvets.

This Ultima S-Line machine uses direct injection technology to pre-mix detergent and water into a foam for injection into the wash. This helps to lift dirt more rapidly during the wash cycle and enables the machine to operate at low temperature, even down to just 20°C.

The RPD9467J achieves a very high efficiency rating - 20% better than the EU's maximum A+++ label. However, wash times at high temperatures can be long - 3.75 hours for a full load at 60°C, and 2.5 hours for a half-load at 40°C. Lower temperature washes are probably a more practical option for busy households.

The Anti-Stain Turbo cycle is a 45 minute wash at 20°C that's able to handle washes that aren't too badly stained. Daily Wash 30° is designed for everyday use with normally stained loads.

The Steam Refresh cycle is a short 20 minute cycle that removes odours and smells to freshen up clothes that have only been worn for a few hours. Steam Hygiene adds an extra period of steam at the end of a full wash cycle for a deep intensive clean.

In total there are 16 programmes available, including some special programmes such as Anti Allergy Plus, Anti Allergy Delicates and a Woolmark Platinum Care.

The machine incorporates Hotpoint's Super Silent brushless motor and insulating panels, and is quiet during washing and reasonably quiet during spinning too, although certainly not silent. The machine has a moderate 1400rpm maximum spin speed, giving it a "B" spin class, and getting clothes reasonably dry.

The RPD9467J is a mid-market product from a well-known brand, and comes with a parts warranty for ten years, with labour covered for the first year.

Conclusion - a recommended family washing machine

The Hotpoint RPD9467J is a step up from the company's entry-level products, and gives you a lot for your money. It's a very energy efficient machine, with a broad choice of wash programmes, including Steam Hygiene and low temperature washes. It's quiet in operation too, and seems to be well-constructed, with a high-tech control panel that displays useful information. It's a good size for a family too, and is very well-priced. It's probably the best Hotpoint washer we've reviewed so far this year.
