Huawei Y6 review

 Review: June 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The 100 Huawei Y6 is a budget Android phone that looks like it costs twice as much. Slim, super-lightweight and stylish, it features a large 5-inch HD screen that's quite possibly the best you can buy for the money. Battery life is good too, but the Snapdragon 210 processor and basic cameras are less impressive.

Design & looks

The Huawei Y6 looks a lot more expensive than a £100 phone. Sleek and lightweight, with bevelled edges and twin speaker grilles along its bottom edge, there's a real sense of design flair here, and we have no complaints about build quality or looks. In fact, we'd go further and say that this is one of the best constructed budget phones we've reviewed.

The Y6 is quite large for an entry-level phone, with a big 5 inch screen. This is another of the highlights of the phone. It's a HD screen, with a big pixel count of 1280 x 720, and is a high quality IPS display that's bright and easy to read, even in sunlight. Few phones can match this screen at this price.

The Y6 is available in a choice of Black or White, and also in single sim or dual sim versions. The dual sim version lets you use two active sim cards in the phone.

Android KitKat - Huawei style

The Y6 runs Android 5.1 KitKat, with Huawei's Emotion UI 3.1 user interface modifications. This is quite a nice skin, with some useful functionality added.

Snapdragon 210 processor

OK, this is probably the phone's weakest point. The quad-core Snapdragon 210 is very much an entry-level component, and with a maximum clock speed of 1.1GHz, it isn't a very powerful processor. The phone has 1GB of RAM (2GB in the dual sim version), and it just isn't very fast. You can run all the core apps that you'd want, but they can be slow to load, unresponsive at times, and you don't want to push the phone too hard with 3D games.

The phone comes with 8GB of storage, which is an acceptable amount for an entry-level phone.

Basic cameras

The main camera on the Y6 uses an 8 megapixel sensor and a wide f/2.0 aperture for enhanced low-light performance, but it's not a replacement for a real digital camera. It will get good results in good lighting, but quickly becomes grainy as light fades.

The 2 megapixel front camera is good for quick selfie snaps.

The Y6 is a 4G phone and has all the essentials: Wi-Fi support, GPS/Glonass positioning, Bluetooth, USB and a headphone jack.

Battery life

The Y6 comes with a fairly beefed-up 2200mAh battery, and the Snapdragon 210 is light on energy use, but the HD IPS screen uses more power than a basic screen. You might be able to get two days on a full charge if you don't push the phone too heavily.

Conclusion - stunning design, but under-powered

Finding the perfect phone for a hundred pounds is a tough call, and something always has to be compromised. The Huawei Y6 gets the design and screen 100% right, with amazing looks for a budget phone, and a beautiful HD screen. The compromise is in its performance, with a low-end processor, and basic camera.

If you're happy making that choice, then the Huawei Y6 is a very good option. If you want a little more power for the same kind of money, you might consider the Motorola Moto G (3rd Gen) or Samsung J3.

Mine was sent to me from the UK and it works but it was unlocked before it was sent down here. Try and unlock it.
