Samsung BD-H6500 review

 Review: November 2014

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: The Samsung BD-H6500 is a top-rated Blu-Ray player with 3D support and UHD/4K upscaling. Smart TV functionality is included, plus Wi-Fi and ethernet connectivity, and 7.1 channel optical audio output. It's outstanding value at just over £100.

Design & looks

The Samsung BD-H6500 Blu-Ray player may not look very different from its entry-level counterparts, but it houses plenty of advanced functionality under its skin. There are touch sensitive controls on the panel and an LED display. The device starts up incredibly quickly, in about half a second.

Playback

The player can play 2D and 3D Blu-Ray disks as well as DVDs, including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW. It can also play CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW.

A key advantage of this model is that it can upscale content to UHD/4K for use on a compatible TV. This is particularly valuable at present when there's no native UHD support for Blu-Ray disks. Playback quality is superb.

Audio quality is excellent, with support for 7.1 digital decoding via the optical output connection. A built-in CD ripping feature lets you convert CD audio to digital formats.

Smart TV

The BD-H6500 includes popular Smart TV apps like YouTube, BBC iPlayer, 4oD, Demand 5, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. A dual-core processor makes operation fast and smooth.

Connectivity

The player connects to a HD or UHD TV via HDMI and there's an optical digital audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.

A USB port in the front panel lets you plug in a USB or external hard drive and access music, photos or videos on your TV. Screen mirroring of compatible smartphones and tablets is supported with AllShare.

Internet access is via built-in Wi-Fi or an ethernet cable.

If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices.

Conclusion - a superb high-end Blu-Ray player

The BD-H6500 is probably the outstanding model in Samsung's 2014 range. It delivers high-end features - UHD upscaling, 3D playback, 7.1 channel audio, and fully-featured Smart TV - for just over £100, making it outstanding value and a good investment for the future.

Does the 40mm height include the feet on the unit?

Asked by Sam Carlile from USA on 11th May 2016
I want to stack this unit on top of a cable box with very limited space and am concerned about space for ventilation.
