Samsung BD-J5500 review

 Review: April 2015

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Samsung BD-J5500 3D Blu-ray & DVD Player with BBC iPlayer, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video is a low-cost way to make any TV smart and get access to disk playback, catch-up TV and streaming media all at the same time. It includes an ethernet internet connection, but is missing Wi-Fi.

A curved design

The Samsung BD-J5500 3D Blu-Ray player has a strikingly different curved design with a very small footprint, and is a stylish accompaniment to any TV. A tray deck mechanism holds the disk, and the player has power and eject buttons on its front for added convenience.

3D playback

This entry-level player can handle both 2D and 3D Blu-Ray disks as well as DVDs, including DVD+/-R and DVD+/-RW. It can also play CDs, including CD-R and CD-RW formats. A useful CD ripping feature is available for converting music into digital files.

DivX HD format is supported by the player, as well as MPEG 2/4 video decoding.

Audio support for Dolby True HD and DTS 2.0 audio formats is included.

Smart TV - iPlayer and more

The device also provides a quick low-cost route to upgrading an older TV to Smart TV functionality. An easy-to use graphical user interface gives you access to apps such as the BBC iPlayer, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and YouTube.

Connectivity

Smart TV and network access is available via an ethernet port, but Wi-Fi isn't available on this low-cost model. The device supports DLNA networking, so you can use it to view content stored on a connected PC or laptop.

A HDMI output is used to connect to a HD TV. Additionally, an external sound system can be connected using the coaxial digital audio output. A USB 2.0 connector enables you to plug in a USB drive and play music, photos or videos directly on your TV.

If you have a Samsung TV, the Anynet+ feature lets you use just one remote control to control both devices.

Conclusion - a top-value entry-level Blu-ray player

Samsung's BD-J5500 is the company's entry-level Blu-Ray player for 2015, and it offers a lot of features for a small outlay.
