Samsung RSA1RTPN review
Review: December 2015 | ||
![]() Rating: In a nutshell: The Samsung RSA1RTPN A-series American-style fridge-freezer offers absolutely enormous fridge and freezer capacity, and at a very competitive price. With a silver steel finish, a chilled water dispenser, and Samsung's digital inverter motor for added reliability and efficiency, it's an affordable kitchen luxury, and is very highly recommended. |
Design & features
The Samsung RSA1RTPN has a very similar design to the RSA1UTMG American-style fridge-freezer. It shares the same body, measuring just over 90cm wide, with a depth of almost 70cm, making it a large and imposing kitchen appliance. It's a side-by-side fridge-freezer, with a water dispenser in the fridge door, but in this version, the dispenser isn't plumbed.
The Samsung RSA1RTPN is very solidly built and beautifully finished, with a satin-smooth, easy-clean Platinum Inox stainless steel surface. The door handles are simple and practical, and the chilled water dispenser is easy to keep clean.
Inside, the space is cavernous, offering more freezer space than almost any other combined fridge-freezer on the market. There are multiple shelves and drawers in both the fridge and freezer sections, and we're particularly fond of the clever, compact ice trays in the freezer.
Although we can't fault the simple, spacious layout, we do have an issue with the fridge door. The chilled water dispenser isn't plumbed, and so there's a large water tank in the fridge door, which eats a lot of useful space, and needs regular topping-up.
Apart from that, the design of the RSA1RTPN is excellent, and we appreciate the no-frost feature and the bright LED lighting.
Efficiency, noise & reliability
As with any 90-cm width fridge-freezer, energy consumption is at the higher end, despite the Samsung RSA1RTPN's A+ efficiency rating. It's a relatively noisy machine in operation too. Bear in mind that the capacity of this machine is double that of a standard 60cm fridge-freezer, so it's rather like running two appliances side-by-side.
The RSA1RTPN uses a digital inverter motor, which should have a much longer lifespan than a conventional unit. The appliance is very solidly built, and its simple, elegant design should mean that there is less to go wrong. We anticipate that this appliance will last for many years, making it a sound investment.
Conclusion - very highly recommended
American-style fridge-freezers don't come cheap, but the price of the Samsung RSA1RTPN is actually very reasonable. In fact, it's cheaper than some 60cm models, making it extraordinarily good value.
It's especially good value when you consider the massive amount of storage space available here - especially for freezing. Only the compromised door space in the fridge door counts against it.
The chilled water dispenser is very useful, and the fact that it isn't plumbed makes the installation of the appliance much simpler. On the other hand, it does mean that you'll need to top up the water reservoir manually.
On balance, we find the value on offer here compelling, and would thoroughly recommend this appliance.

Should the central roller foot be removed when it is installed?

It is making the fridge slope back slightly and leaves the adjustable
feet in the front corners not touching the floor. I can find no
mention of it in the User Manual.
How do you take handles or doors off please?

For getting through the door!
Does the unit have an audible door open alarm? How long before it activates? Thanks.
