Sony BDP-S1500 review

 Review: June 2015

Last updated April 2016

Rating: 4 stars

In a nutshell: The Sony BDP-S1500 is the company's entry-level Blu-Ray player for 2015 and includes all the essentials, plus a few extras such as Smart TV, an ethernet connection, a coaxial audio output and a super-fast start-up time of under one second. It just misses out on 3D playback and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Design & looks

The Sony BDP-S1500 is a super-compact Blu-Ray player with a sliding tray for disks. It has an extremely low power consumption of 8.8W and comes with a remote control. The player features a super-quick start time of just one second to boot up.

Playback

In addition to Blu-Ray disks, the BDP-S1500 also plays DVDs and audio CDs.

This is Sony's entry-level player for 2015 and it doesn't support 3D playback, but it will upscale DVDs to Full 1080p HD. It includes support for 16-bit deep colour, Triluminos and 24p cinema playback.

Sony Entertainment Network

The player also gives you access to Smart TV via the Sony Entertainment Network. This includes catch-up TV, YouTube videos, and a library of movies, music and games.

Connectivity

The player has a HDMI output for connecting to a HD Ready TV, plus a coaxial audio output for connecting to an external speaker system.

A USB input lets you plug in a USB device to access music, photos or videos on your TV.

Smart TV is accessed via an ethernet cable. There's no wireless Wi-Fi option available in this basic model.

Conclusion

The Sony BDP-S1500 is Sony's cheapest Blu-Ray model for 2015, costing just £50. It misses out on features like 3D playback and a Wi-Fi connection, but if you don't need those features, this is an excellent buy.

The Sony BDP-S4500 adds 3D support, and the Sony BDP-S1700 Blu-Ray player is an updated version for 2016.
