Sony BDP-S6500 review

 Review: December 2015

Rating: 5 stars

In a nutshell: The Sony BDP-S6500 Blu-Ray player is a top-quality disk player, using Sony's 4K upscaling chip to deliver rich, detailed video to a UHD TV. It's 3D-capable, includes built-in Wi-Fi and ethernet connections, and also gives you access to Smart TV via the Sony Entertainment Network.

Design & looks

The Sony BDP-S6500 Blu-Ray player is a high-end product, but you wouldn't guess that from its looks. It has a compact footprint with simple styling, and is finished in black plastic. The design is simple, functional, but unassuming. A matching remote control is included in the sales package.

The device is incredibly energy efficient, using just 12W in use, and less than a watt in standby.

Playback with 4K Ultra HD upscaling

Despite it's discreet looks, the BDP-S6500's capabilities are well above average. It can handle all kinds of Blu-Ray disks, including 3D disks, in addition to DVDs and CDs. You'll get a superior picture quality from the S6500 if you have a UHD TV, since the player incorporates 4K Ultra HD upscaling.

It also includes features such as 16-bit deep colour, Triluminos and 24p cinema playback.

Sony Entertainment Network

The S6500 connects to the Sony Entertainment Network, giving a range of Smart TV services, including catch-up TV, YouTube and Netflix streaming, and Sony's own library of movies, music and games, available for download or streaming.

Connectivity

The Sony BDP-S6500 includes all the connectivity options that most users will want. The device has built in ethernet and multi-antenna Wi-Fi connectivity for easily connecting to the internet. It's DLNA-compatible and can connect to other devices on your home network. This enables you to access music, photos and videos from a connected PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone or other device. Screen mirroring is available for compatible smartphones and tablets.

A HDMI output is used to connect the player to your TV, and a digital coaxial output enables audio to be sent to a sound system. You can also plug in devices via the USB port.

Sony's SideView app, which is available for Android and iOS, lets you control the Blu-Ray player via a smartphone or tablet.

Conclusion

The Sony BDP-S6500 Blu-Ray player is a well-specified player, and is now available at a very competitive price. Just about everything you could want is included here, at least until the next generation of UHD Blu-Ray players becomes available in 2016.
