YouView review

In a nutshell: YouView adds on-demand TV to Freeview, making it the best free service available.

YouView setup & requirements

YouView is an extension to the popular Freeview digital broadcast service, adding additional content over the internet. For this, you'll need an aerial, a YouView box and a broadband internet connection. Normal broadcast TV is accessed via the aerial, and on-demand TV is via the internet. The box integrates the two services into one easy-to-use package. The best thing is that it's all free!

YouView boxes - on demand

YouView boxes offer Freeview HD, including PVR functionality such as the ability to pause, rewind and record live TV. You can also record one programme while watching another.

What makes YouView different to Freeview is the ability to scroll back up to 7 days in the schedule. This brings together catch up TV from BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD, Demand 5 and Dave. This content is delivered via the internet rather than through your TV aerial. The EPG displays the weeks' highlights so that you can easily find the most popular shows.

In addition, Now TV lets you watch a range of pay movies. Television X, the UK’s largest adult television network also has an On Demand movie service on YouView.

YouView app

The YouView mobile app for iOS and Android lets you view what's on TV now and over the next 7 days and set your YouView box to record from your smartphone or tablet.

Conclusion - the best free service

YouView takes Freeview to the next level. By replacing your Freeview box with a YouView box, you gain access to catchup TV for the past 7 days. It's simple to use and is as good as you can get without upgrading to a subscription service like Sky or Virgin.
